Terrace-Wall™ Reformers

Terrace-Wall™ reformers are a unique design, supplied worldwide by one major OEM. While still considered a steam methane reformer from a process viewpoint, the refractory issues are different. The lower radiant walls have thermal and mechanical issues peculiar to the design. Burners firing directly onto an angled wall require special design and material selection. Significant and dynamic tube movement results in complex furnace sealing issues effecting efficiency, operational control and emissions. This tube movement also creates a problem in protecting the outlet pigtails and manifold from radiant heat.

THORPE custom designs, shop fabricates, and installs HOTSEAL™ Furnace Penetration Seals, which are dynamic seals capable of accommodating the tube movements. To minimize air infiltration, HOTSEAL™ Furnace Penetration Seals are designed as a composite using multiple layers of carefully selected materials for each application. THORPE also custom designs radiant heat shields to protect the outlet pigtails and manifolds while accommodating for the tube movement.

Extensive design and installation experience in solving field refractory problems allows Thorpe to upgrade customer’s furnaces to include the latest in refractory thermomechanical design and material science.

Examples include:

  • Soft arches using the Z-BLOK™
  • Lower and upper radiant walls
  • Process tube HOTSEAL™ system
  • Convection section walls
  • Floors and outlet bullnose
  • Transfer lines
  • Outlet pigtail and manifold radiant heat shields
  • Secondary reformers
  • Application of Emisshield® High Emissivity Coating installations
